We know the Ward Freman Pool was built in the late 1970’s and believe that the headmaster of Ward Freman School, Roger Harcourt was instrumental in its creation. From the outside the building remains pretty much as it did when it was built, a classic solidly built brick building. The chimney from the original oil fired boilers still stands although hasn’t been in use since swapping to gas boilers.

At the Ward Freman Community Pool Group headquarters we have heard rumours that the pool received a significant grant from Buntingford Town Council and the students of Ward Freman School were involved in fundraising events including a sponsored walk in order to raise the funds to build the pool.

We have approached the Town Council, asking for a grant of £45,000 but would love to hear from anyone with memories of the original fundraising events that enabled the pool to be built and if possible recreate these in order to raise funds once again to get the pool reopened.

We would also love to know about any special events that have taken place at the swimming pool. Have the Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth games been celebrated in any way at the pool? Have you got a story about an epic pool party, or school swimming lessons? Did the giant inflatable deflate during a fun session? Have you taken part in swimming competitions against other schools or swimming clubs, what happened, who won? Which teachers or swimming coaches do you recall being thrown into the pool at the end of term? Who was your favourite swimming teacher and why? Who was your least favourite and why? What has happened at Freman house swimming competitions or triathlon events? Who took part in the Buntingford triathlon? Did your hand get stuck in the vending machine as you tried to reach something that was stuck? Were you involved with a code brown (if you know, you know!)?
