On Friday 27th September Mark and Sharon Lewis will be hosting the 10th David Lewis Memorial Golf Day at East Herts Golf Club. This year we are honoured to have been chosen as the beneficiary of the event.

Over the past nine years Mark has been hosting this event in memory of his father and raises on average £1000. The Buntingford Food Bank, local hospices and Freman College Sports department have all been previous beneficiaries.

I’m sure many local people will remember David Lewis who was a PE teacher at the Ward Freman School when it first opened and taught there for over 30 years. He was present when the swimming pool was built and spent a considerable amount of his working time at the pool.
Mark’s sisters both worked at the pool just after they left school and he recalls many times in his youth swimming with mates and grabbing a drink and chocolate bar from the vending machines afterwards. Thus, there is great affection in the Lewis family for the pool.

If you would like to be part of this special memorial event please email s.lewis730@btinternet.com before the 13th September. The competition will be in teams of four (but individual entries are welcome to make up teams) starting with a full English breakfast and then 18 holes of golf. The cost is £70 per person.

“My dad was a big community person so would have hated what has happened to the swimming pool”

Mark Lewis

If you have any memories of David Lewis teaching you PE, especially swimming we would love to hear from you. Please email your stories to jwillett@wardfremanpool.org
